The Cardinal Tetra

Scientific name: Paracheirodon axelrodi
Minimal tank size: N/A
Max growth: 1.5 inch
Special requirements: Keep in pairs at minimum.

The red tan line on cardinals doesn't stop at their abdomen...Cardinal tetras grow a little longer than their neon counterparts, and their red bottom stripe continues over their abdomen to their mouth.

Unlike neons, cardinals are wild caught and are not aquacultured as are the neons. This explains why they boast a slightly heftier price tag.

Cardinals should be kept in pairs or preferably a school. They can live at higher temperature, and this is why they are often seen with discus. Many people believe the cardinals are prettier than the neons, but it all really comes down to personal taste.

A school of cardinals infected my planted ten gallon tank with disease. Of the ten I ultimately bought, four survived. They took with them a number of other fish, including a beautiful golden male betta, a kuhli loach, and a couple neons. Although they are prone to diseases like intestinal parasites because they are wild caught, they do not contract the neon tetra disease.
