The Black Skirt Tetra

Scientific name: Gymnocorymbus ternetzi
Minimal tank size: 5 gallons
Max growth: 2 inches
Special requirements: May eat ghost shrimp or even your smaller tetras.

The black skirt or black tetra.I originally kept a single specimen in my ten gallon tank, long before I ever thought of adding live plants. Black tetras can be aggressive with their own species, despite being a schooling fish. They are best kept singly, in pairs in larger tanks, or schools.

Mine now resides in the 55 gallon with the big guys. I added a second black tetra, a long-finned variety, and they chase each other around constantly. The first one is the dominant fish, and she occassionally nips at her long-finned companion. I believe if I were keeping the pair in my ten gallon the long-finned fish would be harassed constantly.

These fish breed easily in aquaria. They scatter their eggs, and if you have a school of them, you will probably observe spawning or eggs soon.

This was one of my first fish and is still with me. She eats like a pig and is tough as nails. Their flounder-like appearance adds a nice tone to most freshwater community tanks.
