The Black Neon Tetra

Scientific name: Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi
Minimal tank size: N/A
Max growth: 1.5 inch
Special requirements: Keep in pairs at minimum.

Black neon gets a little larger than regular neons.Black neons are my personal favorite of the small schooling tetras. They are peaceful, and their unique colors often contrast nicely with other fish. I briefly had a shoal of nine black neons in my discus tank, and they looked amazing as they schooled in the tanned water.

I've noticed my black neons especially love bloodworms. They seem a tad more finicky when it comes to eating, but a sprinkle of freeze-dried bloodworms did the trick. They now eat voraciously.

If I ever do a discus centered tank, I will most definitely include a large school of black neons.
